Your First Resin Art Project: The Basic Steps

Getting started with resin art is easier than you think. Following these fundamental steps will ensure a successful first piece.

Prepare Your Workspace Work in a well-ventilated area. Cover your surface with a plastic sheet, and make sure your work surface is perfectly level to prevent uneven curing.

  1. Gather Your Supplies You will need epoxy resin and hardener, mixing cups, stirring sticks, pigments or acrylic paints for color, a surface (like a silicone mold or wooden panel), and essential safety gear like gloves.
  2. Measure and Mix Carefully measure the resin and hardener according to the manufacturer’s instructions, typically a 1:2 ratio. Mix thoroughly for several minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup to ensure the mixture is fully combined.
  3. Add Color Separate the mixed resin into smaller cups and add your chosen pigments or inks. A little color goes a long way, so add it gradually.
  4. Pour Your Design Pour the colored resin onto your surface or into your mold. You can pour colors side-by-side, layer them, or tilt the surface to help them blend
  5. Remove Bubbles After pouring, bubbles will rise to the surface. Use a heat gun or torch to gently warm the surface, which will pop the bubbles and leave a smooth finish.
  6. Cure Your Piece Cover your project with a box or container to protect it from dust and hair. Let it cure for at least 24 hours, or as directed by the instructions, until it is hard to the touch.
